Burner covers create extra counter space  to set down a box or mixing bowl in spatially challenged kitchens. They are a decorative cover-up when the stove is not in use or before sudden guests arrive. They keep spatters from landing on clean burners.

Do shut the heat and remove the hot cover with tongs, as quickly as possible. Our genuine stainless steel will hold up a little better than others if you tend to turn on wrong burners. Waited about 1-2 minutes before realizing it. Nothing adverse happened. We pulled it off the burner by its chain. When we removed a hot pot and covered the hot burner. The ceramic cover just got very hot.
